Cardiovascular Institute and Fu Wai Hospital is a specific hospital affiliated to Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS). It is the WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Cardiovascular Diseases and Chinese Technical Cooperation and Training Center of Cardiovascular Disease.

 

Cardiovascular Institute and Fu Wai Hospital is a specific hospital for cardiovascular diseases. There are 14 operating rooms, 4 ICUs (two for adults and one other for children), 1 CCU and 500 inpatient beds. There are approximately 6,000 cardiovascular surgeries performed every year, which consist of about 40% pediatric cases, 40% valvular cases, 16% CABG, 4% emergencies and the others.

 

The Department of Anesthesiology of Cardiovascular Institute and Fu Wai Hospital has 21 attending anesthesiologists which consist of 2 professors, 11 associate professors, and 10 assistant professors.

 

There are 20£­25 trainees every year and 6 postgraduate students in our department, who came from all over of China.

 

The patients undergoing operations in our hospital suffer from congenital, rheumatic, coronary heart diseases, and other cardiovascular diseases. Some of them suffer from pheochromocytoma, primary hyperaldosteronism, and diabetes mellitus, or have the cardiothoracic ratios of more than 0.9. Of these patients, about 60% are the adults, such as CABG,, valuloplasty or valve replacement, aortic aneurysm surgery, chronic constrictive pericarditis, myxoma, obstructive hypertrophic myocardiosis, and Marfan's syndrome, etc.. For pediatrics, we do neonate and complex anomaly, such as: anomalous drainage of pulmonary veins, tricuspid atresia, Ebstein's anomaly, pulmonary atresia, aorta-pulmonary septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, endocardial cushion defect, double output of right ventricle, transposition of great arteriesls. The least body weight of the neonate undergoing the open heart operations is 2.7 Kg , the least age is 6 days.
