The Echocardiography Department was founded in 1975 by Professor Hanying Liu. This is an independent department and professor Liu was the first director of this department. The current director is Professor Hao Wang.

As the pioneer that specifically focused on the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases in China, this department has a very splendid history. The first case of cardiac myxoma in China was diagnosed in this department with the M-mode echocardiography in 70¡¯s. Until now, we still keep the largest number of echo records for cardiac tumor in our country. Also, we accumulated more than 600,000 records of diagnosis for cardiovascular diseases such as congenital heart diseases, great vessel diseases and valvular heart diseases.

Currently, there are 31 stuffs, including 20 doctors, 4 sonographers, 3 nurses and 1 biomedical engineer in this department. We have 11 out-patient clinic diagnostic rooms and 3 diagnostic rooms in several specific wards. Totally 18 color Doppler echo machines are used everyday for echo exams such as transthoracic, transesophageal, intra-operative and portable echo. Most of the echo machines are new with latest version like Philips IE 33, GE Vivid Dimension and Sequoia 512. About 300 patients can be examined every day. In year 2005, 92,000 patients received echo exams here in this department, which was the largest number in the world. Many patients with rare cardiac abnormity come to Fu Wai hospital for further diagnosis and treatment, which is from all over the country and also from abroad. For example, Tetralogy of Fallot, endocardial cushion defect, double outlet right ventricle and transposition of great vessels can often be seen here. In addition to cardiac exam, there are some abdominal and blood vessels exams.

Since the foundation of the echocardiography department, we have won 16 achievements from the Ministry of Public Health and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Many latest techniques are under research or have been used as a routine work in our department, such as myocardial tissue Doppler imaging, myocardial contrast echocardiography, real-time three-dimensional echocardiography, echo guidance of cardiac interventional therapy and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

As the diagnostic and teaching center of echocardiography, the department is also actively involved in teaching, training of medical and technological staff from all over the country. More than 100 doctors are trained in our department each year. Till now, 2000 echo doctors have been trained here. Also, many different kinds of echocardiographic seminars have been held by our department spread the newest techniques throughout the country.
